What You Will Need For This Vegan Honey Garlic Chicken
Main Ingredients:
- Soy Curls
- Agave
- Garlic
- Vegetable Broth
Substitutions:
Soy Curls: You can use tofu or seitan if you are having a hard time locating soy curls. They are very hard to find but can be ordered online.
Agave: Maple syrup would work but the maple flavor would definitely come through. You could also substitute this with brown sugar.
But honey and chicken aren’t vegan?
Obviously honey and chicken are not vegan! We are using agave syrup to substitute honey and for the chicken we are using soy curls. Soy curls are dehydrated soy that you rehydrate in water or broth and can add to any meal for a meaty texture. It’s really a blank canvas for flavor! I have found that these aren’t too easy to find but can be ordered on their website.

Vegan Honey Garlic Chicken
Ingredients
Vegan Honey Garlic Chicken:
- 4 oz Soy Curls roughly 2 cups
- 2 tablespoons Better Than Bouillon Vegetable Base
- 2 cups Water
- 2 tablespoons Cornstarch
- Spray Oil for baking
- Rice for serving
- 1-2 tablespoon Scallions for garnish
Honey Garlic Sauce:
- 1/2 cup Vegetable Broth reserved from soaking soy curls
- 1/4 cup Low Sodium Soy Sauce
- 1/4 cup Agave Syrup
- 1 tablespoon White Vinegar
- 2 teaspoons Chili Sauce
- 2 teaspoons Cornstarch
- 1/4 of a Red Onion
- 2-3 Cloves of Garlic
- 1 tablespoon Fresh Ginger
Instructions
- Measure out roughly 2 cups or half of an 8oz bag of soy curls in to a bowl. In a separate bowl mix together vegetable base with the water. Pour vegetable broth over soy curls and let soak for 10 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 400F.
- Be sure to reserve 1/2 cup of the soaking broth for the sauce. Put it in a separate bowl and set aside. I like to use the rest of the reserved broth to cook the rice. Squeeze out excess broth from the soy curls and place back in to the bowl. Toss with the cornstarch until it's coated and becomes translucent. Place on a baking tray and spray or drizzle with oil. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until crispy.
- To start the sauce combine the reserved 1/2 cup of broth with the low sodium soy sauce, agave, white vinegar, chili sauce, and cornstarch. Set aside.
- Mince red onion, garlic, and ginger. In a pan on medium-high heat, add 1 tablespoon coconut oil. Add the red onion and cook for 5-7 minutes until soft and starting to brown. Then, add in garlic and ginger. Cook for another minute or two. Add in the sauce and lower the heat. Whisk occasionally until thickened, about 7-10 minutes.
- Toss in soy curls and that's it! Serve you vegan honey garlic chicken with rice and top with scallions. Enjoy!
What a delicious meal! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe! I just made it for lunch and the kids (picky eaters) and I scarfed it down with no leftovers in sight.
The tofu curls had almost the exact consistency of chicken and the sauce was delicious! My only substitution was 1/2 tsp of fresh ginger grated on a Microplane instead of 1Tbsp finely minced. I ordered a 3-pack of tofu curls from Amazon and will be attempting BBQ sliders for dinner tonight. This has been my kids favorite new dish since I started my vegan lifestyle at the beginning of quarantine. Thank you again!
I’m so happy you and your family enjoyed! Thank you so much for leaving a review. I appreciate it so much! Also, congrats on going vegan. It’s such an amazing lifestyle and I hope my blog can help you along your journey! Enjoy your BBQ sliders. That’s sounds delicious!
This looks fantastic! Just double checking that you used two Tablespoons (not teaspoons) of the bouillon?
Yes. 2 Tablespoons. It’s more than the serving size that better than bouillon recommends so that the soy curls soak in as much flavor as possible. 🙂
This looks fantastic! If you don’t have Chili Sauce and don’t want to buy it for 2 tsp, what would you suggest as a substitute?
No worries! You can leave it out and add a sprinkle of dried red pepper flakes for a touch of heat or sriracha would work well too 🙂
