Crispy air fryer tofu close up.

Air Fryer Tofu without Cornstarch

This air fryer tofu without cornstarch is crisp on the outside and tender inside using a simple, no-starch method. Nutritional yeast and a small amount of oil help create a light coating for the right texture in minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 block Extra-Firm Tofu drained and pressed
  • 1 tablespoon Low-Sodium Soy Sauce or gluten-free tamari
  • 1 tablespoon Nutritional Yeast
  • ½ teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • ½ teaspoon Onion Powder
  • ½ teaspoon Smoked Paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon Kosher Salt
  • ¼ teaspoon Black Pepper
  • Spray Avocado Oil or other neutral oil

Instructions

  • Press the tofu for at least 15 minutes to remove excess moisture. Use a tofu press or wrap the block in a clean towel and place something heavy on top to drain.
  • Cube the tofu and add it to a shallow bowl.
  • Toss the tofu cubes into the low-sodium soy sauce and let it absorb for 3-5 minutes.
  • Add the nutritional yeast and seasonings, then toss to coat evenly. Lightly spray with oil and toss again until the coating sticks to the tofu.
  • Transfer the tofu to the air fryer basket and air fry at 400F for 13-15 minutes or until crispy, shake the basket often to ensure even cooking. No need to preheat the air fryer.

Notes

Please note that air fryers can vary. When attempting this recipe for the first time, I recommend monitoring it closely. Check on the tofu at the halfway point and during the final 2 to 3 minutes of cooking to make sure it's not burning.

Important Note about Salt: Not all salts are made equal and cannot be substituted 1:1. If you are substituting table salt for kosher salt, you will need to cut the amount called for in the recipe by at least half.
