This is the Best Vegan Buffalo Cauliflower Sandwich ever! Cauliflower steaks that have been battered and baked until crispy then tossed in homemade vegan buffalo sauce and drizzled with vegan bleu cheese dressing. It doesn't get better than this!
Spicy, dripping in flavor, and absolutely delicious, this is the Ulitmate Vegan Buffalo Cauliflower Sandwich.
You're going to love this vegan twist on a buffalo chicken and bleu cheese sandwich.
I always have cauliflower in my fridge and hot sauce in my pantry just so I can make this sandwich. The cauliflower is battered and baked then slathered in homemade buffalo sauce and baked once more.
The bleu cheese dressing is made up of vegan mayo, sour cream, lemon juice, fresh herbs, and my new favorite product from Follow Your Heart, bleu cheese crumbles! It's then put together in a sandwich with all the best toppings like lettuce, red onion, and tomato.
Main Ingredients
- Cauliflower, our star
- All Purpose Flour & Spices, to create a batter
- Hot Sauce, mixed with butter to create a buffalo sauce
- Vegan Mayo, the base of our dressing
- Vegan Bleu Cheese Crumbles, sooo good
- Buns & Sandwich Toppings
Substitutions
- All Purpose Flour: You could try out a Gluten-Free All Purpose Flour or possibly chickpea flour. I haven't tried it myself but can imagine it working well.
- Vegan Mayo or Vegan Sour Cream: Unfortunately, I don't recommend substituting the vegan mayo. It's the perfect creamy base for this dressing. But you can leave out the sour cream and just add more mayo.
- Follow Your Heart Bleu Cheese Crumbles: I was stoked to see this in the store. I haven't seen another brand make Bleu Cheese so I can't offer any substitutions but if you can't find it then you can simply leave it out. Obviously that changes the recipe but buffalo cauliflower and vegan ranch is also very very delicious.
Products I Used:
- Vegan Bleu Cheese Crumbles: Follow Your Heart just came out with this product and it is amazing. Not only is it delicious on this sandwich but I've been adding it to my salads and I'm so obsessed.
- Vegan Mayo: I use Follow Your Heart Original Vegenaise. It's my favorite mayo but any vegan mayo you love will work here.
- Vegan Sour Cream: I always use Tofutti. It's by far my favorite but any vegan brand of sour cream will do!
- Hot Sauce: I used my homemade Buffalo sauce for this recipe but you can use store-bought. See buffalo sauce blog post for a list of vegan friendly brands.
How to Make This Recipe
Stir together the all-purpose flour, onion powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt and black pepper in a shallow bowl. Pour in the unsweetened plant milk and the water until you have a smooth batter. Don't overmix.
Coat the cauliflower slices in the batter and place them on a parchment-lined baking tray. Continue with all cauliflower slices and some of the cauliflower florets until the batter is used up.
Bake for 25 minutes @ 425F.
Coat the cauliflower slices and florets in buffalo sauce and bake for another 15-20 more minutes.
Build your sandwich by spreading some bleu cheese dressing on the bottom bun and topping with the buffalo cauliflower, lettuce, tomato, onion, more bleu cheese dressing if desired and a sprinkle of bleu cheese crumbles to finish it off. Enjoy!
How to Make Vegan Bleu Cheese Dressing
Making homemade vegan bleu cheese dressing is super simple thanks to Follow Your Heart's Bleu Cheese Crumbles!
Whisk together the vegan mayo, vegan sour cream, minced onion, minced garlic, lemon juice, white vinegar, finely chopped parsley, dried dill, dried thyme, vegan bleu cheese crumbles, salt, and black pepper to taste.
Tips & Tricks
Trim the green leaves off the cauliflower but be sure to leave most of the stem intact. Cut the cauliflower in half and then into 1 to 1 ½ inch slices. Note that the florets that make up the outer part of the cauliflower will fall apart.
Odds are the cauliflower slices are bigger than your bun so while these large pieces would be delicious roasted as a cauliflower "steak" they aren't super convenient for a sandwich. Simply cut the cauliflower slices in half through the stem so it doesn't fall apart. I got 4 bun-sized steaks out of my head of cauliflower.
Use the remaining cauliflower from the outer parts that fell apart to make buffalo cauliflower bites which can also be pieced together and used for this recipe as well.
