Buffalo sauce is a blend of heat, tang, and richness, traditionally made with hot sauce and butter.
This vegan version delivers the same creamy, spicy flavor using vegan butter and hot sauce, so you still get that classic buffalo taste without dairy!
It's quick to make, easy to customize, and perfect for drizzling, tossing, or dipping just about anything.

Ingredients
Vegan buffalo sauce can be made with just hot sauce and vegan butter.
But to make this version extra flavorful, I add a touch of white wine vinegar along with garlic and onion powder.
The result is a sauce that's tangy, creamy, and packed with flavor, not flat or one-note.

Hot Sauce: Most hot sauce brands are vegan. For this recipe, look for ones that are hot pepper and vinegar based and not one with a lot of added ingredients. I recommend Frank's RedHot Original Hot Sauce.
Vegan Butter: Traditional buffalo sauce has butter in it. Thankfully, we have tons of options to substitute butter. I use Earth Balance.
White Wine Vinegar: Adds more depth of flavor! Can be substituted with apple cider vinegar.
Seasonings: Garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper are added for additional flavor.
Cayenne Pepper: This is optional but it adds a deeper spice flavor.

Substitutions & Variations
Homemade buffalo sauce can be made mild, medium spicy or extra hot.
Simple changes can be made to this recipe to make sure that your preferred spice level is reached.
Make it spicier: Add more cayenne pepper.
Make it mild: Add more melted vegan butter. I would recommend a 1:1 ratio of butter to hot sauce if you are after a mild low-heat buffalo sauce.
Make it sweet & spicy: Add a splash of agave or maple syrup to create a delicious vegan buffalo sauce that is medium spicy with a hint of sweetness.
Serving Ideas
This spicy sauce can be used in countless ways, but it really shines on cauliflower wings and tofu bites.
Cauliflower Wings: A classic but for a good reason! Try this buffalo cauliflower bowl or buffalo cauliflower tacos.
Buffalo Tofu or Tempeh: Drizzle or toss with tofu or tempeh for an easy protein-packed meal or appetizer. Try this buffalo tofu, buffalo shredded tofu tacos, or buffalo tempeh.
Wraps and Sandwiches: Add to wraps, sandwiches, or burgers. It pairs especially well with crunchy lettuce and vegan tahini ranch.
Grain Bowls: Spoon over rice or quinoa bowls with roasted veggies for extra flavor.
Dips and Drizzles: Serve as a dipping sauce for fries, roasted potatoes, or veggie platters.

Tips & Tricks
Look for a hot sauce that is hot pepper and vinegar based and not one with a lot of added ingredients. This will yield better results.
Heat the sauce over low heat and stir frequently until the butter is melted and the sauce is combined. Do not boil.
Whisking while heating helps emulsify the hot sauce and vegan butter for a creamy, cohesive sauce.
Buffalo sauce thickens as it cools, which helps it cling better to cauliflower wings, tofu, or tempeh.
Hot sauces vary in salt and vinegar levels, so taste and adjust seasoning once the sauce is fully combined.
Troubleshooting
If sauce is too thin, simmer a little longer to thicken.
If sauce separates, lower the heat and whisk continuously.
If sauce is too spicy, whisk in a bit more vegan butter.
Storage
Store leftover buffalo sauce in an airtight jar or container for up to 2 weeks.
