Ingredients
This vegan chocolate overnight oat recipe uses simple ingredients and you probably already have most of them in your kitchen.
Here is what you’ll need:
Old-Fashioned Oats: Overnight oats are a no-cook way to make oatmeal by soaking rolled oats in milk overnight. You will want to use old-fashioned oats (rolled oats) as their texture is better than quick oats, which can turn mushy.
Plant-Based Milk: Any unsweetened non-dairy milk works well here. I often use vanilla-flavored unsweetened varieties.
Vegan Yogurt: Adds creaminess and a bit of tang. Unsweetened is preferred.
Chia Seeds: They create a thicker, creamier consistency. Can be replaced with ground flaxseed.
Cocoa or Cacao Powder: Adds a deep chocolate flavor that makes these oats taste like dessert! You can also use cacao powder, the raw and less processed version of cocoa.
Maple Syrup: Just the right amount of sweetness to balance the cocoa. You can always adjust the amount to taste.
Strawberries: You can’t have chocolate strawberry oats without fresh strawberries. Stir some into the oats and save a few for topping!
Salt: Salt is essential to bring out all the flavors. Just a small pinch makes a big difference.

Helpful Equipment
A 16-ounce jar or an airtight container is ideal for making overnight oats.
Here are a few jars that I recommend: Overnight Oat Jars 2-pack, 16 oz Overnight Oats Containers and this 6 Pack Overnight Oats Containers with Spoons.

Substitutions & Variations
Feel free to switch things up based on what you have on hand.
Non-Dairy Milk: Soy, oat, almond, or cashew will work. Use your favorite.
Vegan Yogurt: You can leave it out and add more plant-based milk instead.
Chia Seeds: If you don’t like chia seeds, ground flaxseed works well as an alternative.
Pure Maple Syrup: Agave syrup makes a good substitute.
Topping Ideas
I love topping these strawberry chocolate overnight oats with extra chopped chocolate and fresh strawberries, but you can mix it up with your favorite add-ins!
Fruit: Fresh fruit like bananas or raspberries would be delicious along with the strawberries as both pair well with chocolate.
Nut butter: A spoonful of almond butter, peanut butter, or sunflower seed butter would be great.
Add a crunch: Crunchy toppings like chopped almonds, peanuts, pecans, or granola would be great! If you can find a vegan peanut butter or chocolate granola, that would be delicious.
Flavor Ideas
Overnight oats have been a meal prep favorite of mine for a long time, and I have tons of flavors to choose from.
If you enjoy this one, you’ll want to try others like Matcha Overnight Oats or Coffee Overnight Oats for a breakfast with caffeine.

Missing some ingredients? No worries. You can make Overnight Oats without Yogurt or Overnight Oats without Chia Seeds and still enjoy a delicious breakfast.
Tips & Tricks
Avoid quick oats because they tend to get mushy. Also skip steel-cut oats since they need more time to soften. Old-fashioned rolled oats are best for the right texture.
Don’t skip the chia seeds: The chia seeds create a thick, creamy texture. If you don’t have chia seeds, use flax seeds instead. But you'll want some thickening ingredient for added creaminess.
Salt your oats. It might sound weird, but a small pinch of salt balances the flavors and enhances the sweetness without making your oats taste salty.
Stir before assembling. Before serving, stir your oats well to mix any liquid that has settled on top. If they have become too thick, add a splash of plant-based milk to loosen them up.
Storage
Store your overnight chocolate overnight oats in an airtight containers or jars in the fridge for 3-4 days.
