Ingredients
This vegan honey mustard dressing is made without honey but tastes just like the classic honey mustard that we all know and love.
Spice up your tofu nuggets or salads with this 5-minute sweet and tangy dipping sauce.
Yellow Mustard: Some honey mustard recipes use dijon mustard, but I prefer a good yellow mustard.
Maple Syrup: Adds sweetness. Adjust to preference.
Vegan Mayonnaise: Vegan mayo is the base to our dressing and cannot be substituted— use homemade or store-bought.
Lemon Juice: Adds tang.
Cayenne Pepper: Add more or less depending on your spice preference. I just add a touch for flavor— not to make it spicy.

How to Make This Recipe
You don't need anything fancy to whip up this sweet and tangy dipping sauce.
Add a few simple ingredients to a bowl and whisk until you get a smooth and creamy consistency.
Use as a salad dressing or a dip!
The full written recipe can be found in the recipe card below.
Step 1: Add all the ingredients to a jar or bowl.
Step 2: Whisk well until combined!
I recommend starting with half the amount of maple syrup and adding more as needed— the amount used will depend on your own personal preference.
Note: This recipe makes 12 tablespoons which would be around ¾ cup.
Substitutions & Variations
This recipe is made up of simple ingredients and can be customized a few different ways.
Vegan mayonnaise is the base of this honey mustard dressing. You can try to substitute it with vegan yogurt but I cannot guarantee the results.
Yellow mustard can be substituted with dijon mustard or spicy brown mustard. You can use any mustard but keep in mind that those changes will alter the flavor. If you want a more traditional honey mustard, use yellow mustard. Not all Dijon mustard is vegan though— be sure to read ingredients.
Lemon Juice can be substituted with apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar.
Make it spicy: Add more cayenne pepper.
Make it less sweet: Start with half the amount of maple syrup and adjust from there. Classic honey mustard is very sweet.
Serving Ideas
This honey-free honey mustard is the perfect dipping sauce for a wide variety of different dishes!
Here are a few of my favorites:
Tofu Nuggets: Dip crispy tofu nuggets into honey mustard for a delicious appetizer or snack.
Veggie Burgers: Spread honey mustard on veggie burgers for added flavor.
Roasted Vegetables: Drizzle vegan honey mustard over roasted vegetables like roasted carrots and sweet potatoes or Brussels sprouts.
Grain Bowls: Brown rice, roasted vegetables, and air fryer tempeh with a drizzle of honey mustard makes a delicious dinner.
Salads: Use honey mustard as a dressing for salads made with mixed greens, chickpeas, roasted vegetables, and avocado.
Sweet Potato Fries: Dip baked sweet potato fries into this vegan honey mustard for a sweet and savory snack.
Tips & Tricks
If you prefer a thinner consistency, you can adjust the thickness of the honey mustard by adding a little plant-based milk until you reach your desired texture.
If you prefer it thicker, I would recommend using a thicker store-bought vegan mayo like Vegenaise. I used homemade mayo which has a little thinner consistency.
You can adjust the amount of sweetness based on preference. I would start with half of the amount and adjust from there.
If you have the time, allow the flavors to meld together by refrigerating the vegan honey mustard for 30 minutes before serving.
Storage
Store in the fridge in an airtight container or glass jar for up to a week.
Frequently Asked Questions
This can be a controversial topic to some but its production involves exploiting bees so it is not vegan. We have tons of alternatives to choose from including vegan honey, maple syrup, and agave syrup.
Dijon mustard offers a tangier and slightly spicier taste compared to the milder and slightly sweeter flavor of yellow mustard.
