Ingredients
You can whip up the ultimate snack using just pita pockets, olive oil, and a handful of simple spices.
These vegan pita chips are crispy, golden, and seasoned to perfection with dried herbs and garlic powder.
Pita Bread: I use thin pita bread with pockets for this recipe, as they cook quickly in the air fryer and become extra crunchy!
Olive Oil: You will need to lightly coat all of the pita wedges in oil for them to crisp and golden evenly. You can use avocado oil as well but I prefer the flavor of olive oil.
Seasonings: I used garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, parsley, salt, and black pepper. Feel free to switch it up!
See recipe card for quantities.
Helpful Equipment
To whip up these pita chips, having an air fryer is essential. I use a Ninja Air Fryer XL.
Remember that the results can vary depending on the brand of your air fryer, so make sure to keep an eye on the timing by checking frequently.
Once the chips are golden and crispy, they are ready!
How to Make This Recipe
Making pita chips at home is easier than ever using this air fryer method.
You'll never go back to store-bought after trying these!
The full written recipe can be found in the recipe card below.
Step 1: Slice the pita pockets into 8 wedges.
Step 2: Add them to a large bowl and drizzle in olive oil. Toss to evenly coat each piece.
Step 3: Sprinkle in the seasonings and toss again to ensure all of the pita is coated in spices.
Step 4: Add half the pita to the air fryer— fry in batches to ensure even browning.
Step 5: Air Fry at 350℉ for 5-6 minutes, shaking the basket often.
Repeat with the other batch. They should be crispy and golden brown when done.
Note: The timing will vary depending on your air fryer. My initial batch required around 6 minutes, while the second batch took 5 minutes.
If you find some chips are still a bit soft when you take them out, simply return them to the air fryer for an extra minute or two until they crisp up.
Variations
Get creative and season with a variety of different spices!
Za'atar: This Middle Eastern spice blend includes thyme, sumac, sesame seeds, and salt.
Cinnamon Sugar: For a sweet treat, dust your pita chips with a mixture of cinnamon and sugar before air frying.
Everything Bagel Seasoning: This popular seasoning blend includes sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried minced garlic, dried minced onion, and salt. It would be great on pita chips!
Sea Salt and Rosemary: Keep it simple with a sprinkle of sea salt and chopped fresh rosemary.
Serving Ideas
These air fryer pita chips are the perfect crunchy vessel for scooping up your favorite dip!
Hummus: A classic choice, hummus is a creamy dip made from mashed chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, and garlic.
Tzatziki: This Greek yogurt-based dip can easily be made vegan with unsweetened vegan yogurt, cucumber, garlic, lemon juice, and dill.
Olive Tapenade: A spread made from chopped olives, capers, garlic, olive oil, and herbs.
Baba Ganoush: Made from roasted eggplant, tahini, garlic, lemon juice, and olive oil.
Vegan Shawarma Bowls: Make a delicious shawarma bowl with shawarma-inspired cauliflower or tofu, hummus, rice, and fresh veggies along with some crunchy pita chips!
Tips & Tricks
Toss and season generously. You’ll want to add the pita wedges to a large bowl and toss in olive oil and seasonings until evenly coated. The entire surface should be lightly coated in the oil.
Avoid overcrowding the air fryer. Overlapping the pita bread is fine but it's best to fry in two batches to ensure even browning. If you stack too many pita wedges on top of each other, some might still be soft after the cook time.
Keep an eye on them! Pita chips can go from golden to burnt real fast, so stay alert. I suggest checking them every few minutes and shaking the basket regularly for even crispiness.
Adjust the timing depending on your air fryer. My first batch took about 6 minutes and 5 minutes for the second batch!
If you pull them out and notice some are still slightly soft, throw the soft ones back in the air fryer for another minute or two until crisp.
Storage
Allow the leftover pita chips to cool completely before storing them in an airtight container or plastic ziplock bag at room temperature for up to 5 days.
If you find the chips are softening, add them to the air fryer for an additional 1-2 minutes before serving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! Toss the pita wedges in olive oil and seasonings and bake at 375ºF for 10-15 minutes, flip halfway.
My favorite way to season pita chips is with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and dried herbs. But za'atar, Italian seasonings, or cinnamon sugar would be delicious as well.
