Ingredients
Combine a few simple ingredients including green apple, spinach, and ginger to create a green smoothie that you'll actually want to drink!
Granny Smith Apple: This sour apple wouldn't be sour without a granny Smith apple!
Spinach: Spinach adds a nice green color and a boost of nutrients without negativity impacting the smoothie's flavor.
Lemon: Just a touch of some additional sourness.
Ginger: Ginger, apple, and lemon are a wonderful combination.
Orange Juice: I used a mix of freshly squeezed naval orange juice and blood orange juice.
Pineapple or Mango: I often use either pineapple or mango but a combination of both is best! These ingredients must be frozen for the best results.
Helpful Equipment
You'll need a high-speed blender for this green smoothie recipe.
I use a NutriBullet Pro and highly recommend it if you want a smaller blender.
How to Make This Recipe
Add all ingredients to a high-speed blender and blend until smooth and creamy.
To thin out the smoothie, add more orange juice.
To make it thicker, add a bit more frozen fruit or ice cubes.
Taste and adjust to your preference. If it's too sour for you try adding frozen banana, more mango, or plant-based yogurt.
Pour into a glass and enjoy!
Substitutions & Additions
This delicious, easy, and sour apple smoothie is perfect for breakfast or a healthy afternoon snack!
But everyone has different tastes so here are some substitutions and additions that you might find helpful.
Too sour for your taste? Add a frozen banana, a spoonful of vegan yogurt, or more mango.
Granny Smith Apple: Don't like green apples? Try pink lady, Gala, or your favorite variety of apples. Note that the smoothie won't be as sour anymore so try adding a bit more lemon juice.
Pineapple and/or Mango: I prefer using a mix of both in this smoothie but you can try just pineapple, just mango, bananas, berries, or peaches!
Spinach: Kale would be my second choice!
Tips & Tricks
Use frozen fruit: This smoothie is best when made with frozen fruit. If it's not frozen, the smoothie won't be as thick.
To make a thinner smoothie: Add more orange juice.
To make a thicker smoothie: Try adding more frozen pineapple, mango, or ice.
Storage & Freezing
This easy smoothie recipe makes 1 large serving or 2 smaller servings.
Storage: This vegan apple smoothie is best served fresh. If wanting to save leftovers, see the note below on freezing instructions.
Freeze: Leftover smoothies can be frozen in an ice cube tray and blended when ready to enjoy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Ice cubes can create an icy texture instead of a smooth and creamy one. Using frozen fruit instead will make your smoothie thick, creamy, and cold but without adding that icy texture.
Spinach is a wonderful addition to smoothies due to its high nutritional value and mild flavor. When blended in a smoothie, the spinach breaks down easily, making it easier for your body to digest and absorb the nutrients.
If you want a thicker smoothie, I recommend freezing the apple.
