Ingredients
This brown sugar latte doesn't require anything special. In fact, you probably already have all the ingredients at home!
It can be made hot or iced.
Brown Sugar: Simple syrup is a 1:1 ratio of sugar and water. For this oat milk latte, we are using 1 cup brown sugar to 1 cup water. Vanilla extract is optional.
Espresso: A latte is a made up of one or two shots of espresso and steamed milk. But if you're making yours iced, no need to steam the milk. Frothing is optional. For this recipe, you'll need a double shot of espresso.
Oat Milk: I prefer oat milk when making lattes at home because it's creamy. But I oftentimes use almond milk or soy milk as well. Use your favorite plant-based milk.
Ice Cubes: I made my latte iced as I am an iced only coffee drinker. But if you're making your latte hot, steam the milk and omit the ice.
See recipe card for quantities.
Helpful Equipment
This oat milk latte recipe includes espresso so you will need an espresso machine.
I have a Nespresso and absolutely LOVE it. It brews perfect espresso shots in minutes with no hassle. If you're a coffee lover, you gotta get one.
I use the double espresso vertuo pods.
If you want to froth your milk, I recommend and use an Aeroccino. The aeroccino froths milk hot and cold.
How to Make This Recipe
Oat milk has been a more popular milk option than dairy milk and for good reason. It's creamy, neutral in flavor, and froths like a dream!
This oat milk latte with brown sugar syrup will change your mind about having coffee at home.
The full written recipe can be found in the recipe card below.
Step 1: Add the brown sugar to a saucepan or pan.
Step 2: Whisk in the water.
Step 3: Heat over medium until it reaches a simmer, whisking occasionally until the sugar completely dissolves, approximately 5 minutes. Allow to cool.
Step 4: Add brown sugar syrup to the bottom of a drinking glass and fill with ice cubes.
Step 5: If desired, froth the milk then pour it in to the glass of ice. Frothing is optional. I used an aeroccino to froth the oat milk.
Step 6: Brew a double shot of espresso and pour in the glass. Stir and taste to adjust sweetness. Enjoy!
If making a hot oat milk latte, froth and steam the milk and omit the ice.
Note: Allow the syrup to cool completely at room temperature before using it for iced drinks. It can be immediately added to a hot drink but allowing it to cool before adding it over ice will prevent it from crystallizing.
Substitutions & Variations
Brown Sugar: You can use organic cane sugar and add vanilla if you'd prefer to have a vanilla simple syrup.
Espresso: If you don't have an espresso machine, you can substitute the double shot of espresso with ½ cup strong coffee. Adjust the milk as needed, you might need less.
Oat Milk: Oat milk is my favorite because it is super creamy but almond milk, cashew milk, and soy milk are great substitutes. Use your favorite plant-based milk!
Flavors: Instead of vanilla extract, add hazelnut extract or add cinnamon.
Serving Ideas
The brown sugar syrup isn't just for this oat milk latte! It can be used as a drizzle over oatmeal, pancakes, teas or in a cocktail.
Use in drinks: Add to iced coffee, hot coffee, lattes, hot chocolate, and tea.
Use as a syrup: Drizzle over pancakes, waffles, french toast, or overnight oats.
Make a cocktail: Make a brown sugar cocktail by adding this syrup to a mixture of vodka, plant-based milk, and coffee liquor.
Storage
Store leftover brown sugar syrup in an airtight jar in the fridge for 3-4 weeks. Use in cocktails, tea, coffee, matcha, and more!
Tips & Tricks
Simmer the syrup gently, do not boil. You don't want this to be a thick caramel-like consistency. It should be simmered until the sugar has melted, no more than 5 minutes.
Allow the syrup to cool completely at room temperature before using it for iced drinks. It can be immediately added to a hot drink but allowing it to cool before adding it over ice will prevent it from crystallizing.
Use an unsweetened oat milk so you can be completely in control of the sweetness.
