Cheers to your new favorite smoothie! This Chocolate Tahini Smoothie is like sipping on a dreamy chocolate milkshake. It's vegan, creamy, and made with simple ingredients like oat milk, tahini, cocoa powder, and bananas.
You don't need a ton of ingredients to make a delicious smoothie.
You need a frozen element to add creaminess and body to the smoothie. For this recipe, I used bananas.
They are more neutral in flavor than other fruits and become extra creamy when blended.
The rich chocolate flavor, tangy yogurt, earthy tahini, and sweet frozen bananas perfectly balance each other and no flavor is over powering.

Ingredients
Combine frozen bananas with oat milk, tahini, cocoa powder, and plant-based yogurt to make this creamy vegan chocolate smoothie. It tastes like a healthy milkshake!
It’s dairy-free, vegan, and gluten-free.
Frozen Bananas: Frozen and ripe bananas are a must in order to make this smoothie taste sweet and creamy. Freeze your bananas when they are starting to develop brown spots on the peel.
Oat Milk: Oat milk is the perfect base for smoothies because it's thick and creamy. I recommend using unsweetened oat milk instead of the ones with added sugar.
Plant-Based Yogurt: You will want to use an unsweetened vegan yogurt for this. It adds tang and creaminess. It's perfect for balancing the other flavors.
Tahini: Tahini is earthy and bitter but in the best way. You can find tahini in most grocery stores but I use the one from Trader Joe's.
Cocoa Powder: This smoothie gets it's chocolate flavor from cocoa powder.

I recommend and love a NutriBullet Pro but I used my KIDISLE Retro Blender and it worked wonderfully.

Substitutions & Variations
I'm a big fan of this tahini smoothie not just for its creamy texture but also for its simple ingredient list and chocolate and nutty flavor!
Banana: Replacing the banana in this recipe will change the overall flavor and texture. I wouldn't recommend leaving the banana out.
Oat Milk: Unsweetened almond milk, soy milk, or cashew milk would be great as well. If you use coconut milk, make sure it's from the carton and not from a can.
Tahini: You can replace the tahini with a nut butter like almond butter or cashew butter but the overall flavor will be altered. Tahini has an earthy, slightly bitter flavor.
Yogurt: Plant-based yogurt adds a creamy, tangy flavor and it's used to balance the sweetness of the bananas, richness of the cocoa powder, and earthy tahini. ¼ cup canned coconut milk would be a great replacement.
Optional Add-Ins: Vegan protein powder, chia seeds, ground flax seeds, or hemp seeds.
Storage
Storage: This chocolate vegan smoothie can be stored in an airtight glass jar in the fridge- it's best served as soon as possible but can be enjoyed up to 24 hours after blending.
Freeze: Leftover tahini smoothie can be frozen in an ice cube tray and blended when ready to enjoy.
Tips & Tricks
This delicious, easy, and super creamy chocolate smoothie is the perfect treat.
If your bananas weren't ripe enough you may need to add a bit of sweetness. I recommend 1 tablespoon of maple syrup or 1-2 pitted dates.
To make a thicker smoothie: Add a bit more frozen banana or coconut milk ice cubes.
To make a thinner smoothie: Add more oat milk.
Make it gluten-free: You'll need to use certified gluten-free oat milk. Or use almond milk, soy milk, or cashew milk.
Adjust the amount of tahini and cocoa powder to your preference. If you prefer a stronger tahini flavor, add more tahini. If you prefer a richer chocolate flavor, add more cocoa powder.
Don't like tahini? Use a nut butter like almond butter, cashew butter, or sunflower seed butter. This will alter the flavor but would still be delicious.
Frequently Asked Questions
Make sure you are using an oat milk brand that is certified gluten-free by checking the label. Alternatively, you can use soy milk or almond milk.
Ice cubes create an icy texture instead of a smooth and creamy one. I recommend using frozen coconut milk as ice cubes instead. Freeze canned coconut milk in a silicon ice cube tray and pop them out to add to smoothies when needed!
Tahini is a paste made from sesame seeds. It is dairy-free, gluten free, and is an alternative to nut butters. It's has an earthy, slightly bitter flavor.
