Ingredients
These matcha overnight oats only require 5 minutes of preparation and are a breeze to make, filling, and offer endless customization options.
Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats: I highly recommend using Old-Fashioned Oats instead of quick oats. Quick oats will be thinner and have a mushy consistency.
Matcha: I used matcha from Jade Leaf but also love Ippodo-- it's a bit more pricey. I recommend ceremonial grade matcha powder. While culinary grade is an option, it is less concentrated with a slightly yellowish hue, whereas ceremonial grade boasts a vibrant green color, enhanced aroma, and a naturally fresher, sweeter taste.
Chia Seeds: Chia seeds help thicken the overnight oats.
Oat Milk: These overnight oats are made with oat milk but you can make overnight oats with coconut milk, soy milk, or almond milk.
Non-Dairy Yogurt: Yogurt is going to give these oats extra creaminess. Use unsweetened so you can control the sweetness.
Maple Syrup: This helps sweeten the oats but also balances the earthiness of the matcha powder.
See recipe card for quantities.
Helpful Equipment
I recommend buying a few jars or containers with lids so you can prep your overnight oats in advance to have them on hand for a few days.
I recommend either 8-ounce jars or 16-ounce jars.
This mason jar comes with a spoon and it's my absolute favorite way to prep overnight oats in.

Don't like matcha? Try these coffee overnight oats instead!
Old-Fashioned Oats: Quick oats will be thinner and have a mushy consistency but will work in a pinch. They don't hold up as long.
Oat Milk: Oat milk is my personal favorite but coconut milk is super tasty with these matcha flavored oats. Soy milk and almond milk will work as well.
Yogurt: Vegan yogurt makes these oats even creamier but you can omit them and add more milk.
Chia Seeds: If you don't enjoy chia seeds, try this recipe for Overnight Oats without Chia Seeds instead or use flax seeds.
Pure Maple Syrup: Brown sugar, agave syrup, date syrup, or coconut sugar will work.
Topping Ideas
This overnight oats recipe is perfect for customizing.
Keep it simple with chopped fruit or get creative!
Berries: Fresh strawberries are my go-to because matcha and strawberries are such a good combination! But blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries would be delicious.
Other fruit: Try banana slices, kiwis, or mango!
Granola: This blueberry granola is a delicious crunchy topping to add!
Shredded coconut or coconut flakes: Coconut and matcha taste great together!
Nuts and Seeds or Nut Butter: Almonds, walnuts, peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, etc!
Dried Fruits: Try cranberries, apricots, or dates.
Jam or Fruit Preserves: Blackberry and strawberry are my favorites!
Storage
These matcha overnight oats are great to meal prep for breakfast but is a satisfying snack as well.
Store your overnight oats in an airtight jar or airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Tips & Tricks
Use a matcha powder that you like the taste of! You don't always need to buy the most expensive matcha.
Don't Skip the Maple Syrup: Matcha is slightly bitter and earthy so you'll need the sweetness to tone it down.
Use the appropriate jar: An 8oz jar will be filled to the top with oats and the toppings will overflow a bit so the jar won't close whereas a 16oz jar will allow room for toppings and the lid to close. The 16oz jar is preferred if you're taking the oats on the go.
Don’t Skip the Chia Seeds: The chia seeds create a thick, creamy texture. If you don’t have chia seeds, use ground flaxseeds instead.
Salt your oats! Salt helps balance and bring out the flavors and won't make your oatmeal salty.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, feel free to add more or less depending on preference.
You can stir in chopped strawberries or other fruits to mix in but I would save the toppings to add right before serving.
Overnight oats are meant to be eaten cold but can be heated in the microwave if you prefer warm oats.
I recommend a minimum of 4 hours so the oats have time to soften.
